Origins
Toto's early history, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic growth. In the beginning, Toto manufactured products to meet the growing demand for modern, new urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which allows for greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
In the late 1980s the company began to expand overseas in order to benefit from sales and new markets. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other manufacturers' products to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's market share in the world.

It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company adopted a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and applied the same method in its sales program. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.
